After complaints began rolling in online about "Marty" the robot at Stop & Shop causing crowding at stores during the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, the company is speaking out. Stop & Shop began using Marty more than a year ago to help identify hazards, such as liquid, powder, and bulk food-items spills, said company spokeswoman Maura O'Brien. Party For Marty: Stop & Shop Locations To Celebrate Robots' One-Year Anniversary
Stop & Shop is ready to party with “Marty,” to celebrate the quirky robot’s first year of operation. Last year, Stop & Shop stores introduced more than 300 stores to Marty, who patrols the aisles looking for spills and alerting employees for potential hazardous spots. According to the company, this allows employees to focus on customers, while Marty makes the rounds at certain stores. Cleanup In Aisle 3: Stop & Shop Begins Robot Rollout
Robots are rolling in the aisles at Stop & Shop stores across the region. The supermarket chain's parent company, Ahold Delhaize USA, announced in January plans to place robots in Stop & Shop stores to support efficiency and safety in the stores. The robots are named Marty and their job is to call attention to hazards like when liquid, powder and large foodstuffs spill, then report when action to fix the problem is necessary.
