Westhill Tennis Drops Tight Match to Staples

STAMFORD, Conn. – Staples' boys tennis team edged Westhill, 4-3, Thursday in Westport in a battle between two of the top teams in the Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference.

Staples improved to 12-1, while Westhill fell to 10-2. Greenwich (11-0) is the only unbeaten team in the conference.

Brandon Pomerance of Westhill won at first singles, defeating Jake Hirschberg 6-1, 2-6, 7-6 (9). Danny Soifer won a three-setter at No. 2 singles, beating Graham Hyman 4-6, 7-6 (6), 6-1. Prashant Toteja won 6-3, 6-4 at No. 4 singles.

Staples took control of the match with straight sets wins in doubles, dropping just one game in each.

Westhill, in the midst of one its best seasons ever, meets Ridgefield on Friday. The Vikings also have difficult tests with Fairfield Ludlowe, Fairfield Warde and Greenwich to close out the regular season.
