Westhill Stays Unbeaten After Protested Game

The Westhill High School softball team beat Staples — again. Three weeks ago, Staples head coach Mark Giordano protested his team's 5-3 loss to undefeated Westhill after his pitcher Sam Saccomano accidentally dropped the ball before starting her windup.

Saccomano was called for an illegal pitch, and Westhill's Ali Souza was allowed to score. Upon review, it was determined the umpire was incorrect in calling it an illegal pitch as Saccomano had not started her windup.

So the girls squared off once again in Stamford on Saturday morning, picking up where the game was protested — in the bottom of the first with Souza on third and Westhill trailing, 1-0. The only difference was that Westhill won by an even-greater margin. The Vikings took advantage of three sixth inning errors by the Wreckers and stayed undefeated with an 8-1 victory.

"We didn't really have the right attitude coming into this game," Vikings second baseman Britt Horn said. "We were all pumped up against Stamford [on Friday], but we were just mad we had to play. We're glad we got the win, though."

After three weeks, Souza still scored on a sacrifice fly by Cassandra Kish to tie the game — again. Neither team would score again until the fifth when Westhill's Allison Macari drove in the go-ahead run — just as she did three weeks ago.

Saccomano worked her way out of a bases loaded and no out jam in the fourth but lost her control in the sixth. Westhill sent 11 batters to the plate and scored six times.

Macari dominated on the mound again, not allowing a run — except for the one she let score three weeks ago. Macari finished the game with four strikeouts, allowing only three hits. She was throwing the ball the hardest she has all season, possibly from the frustration of having to play the game again.

"Yeah, it was pretty annoying having to play again after having already beaten them," Macari said. "But you've got to do what you got to do. I felt really good on the mound, and the ball really was coming out well today."

Westhill (17-0, 15-0 FCIAC) faces its most serious challenge to its undefeated record Monday when it travels to Darien (15-1). First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m.
