STAMFORD, Conn. Westhill sophomore Claire Howlett finished third in the 3,200 while Vikings senior Sam Lagasse had two top eight finishes at Tuesdays Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference track and field championships at Danbury High School.
Westhills girls finished with 16 points, while Stamford had 5. Darien won the team championship with 115. In the boys, Westhill had 17 points, and Stamford had just one-half. Staples won with 147.5 and ended Danburys 11-year reign as league champion.
Howlett ran a strong race in the 3,200, staying with the lead pack until the final lap. New Canaan senior Stephanie Benko pulled away in the final 200 meters to win in 11:19.96. Ridgefields Sarah Guillaume was second in 11:23.52.
Lagasse ran 4:27.14 to take seventh in the 1,600, which featured a swift field. Staples Henry Wynne won the race in 4:14.3, the fastest time in the state this spring. In the 3,200, Lagasse ran 9:55.22.
Also for Westhill, Kiara Kallaway took second in the 300 hurdles in 46.63, finishing behind Staples Emily Troelstra. Kallaways time was her best of the year by nearly a second. Kallaway joined Julia Busto, Monique Loney and Mellisa Migden on the seventh place 4 x 100 relay.
In the pole vault, Westhills Evan McCafferty and Billy Thibault went 3-4, while freshman Chris Rough finished sixth.
