Westhill Field Is Nothing To Be Proud Of

"Westhill Proud" is the phrase that many people associate with Westhill High School. But if you drive around to the back of the school and take a look at the current condition of the baseball field, you can't help but feel a sense of embarrassment.

I have been a Stamford resident since 1986 and have been involved in coaching baseball, softball, basketball and soccer with my three children. Over the past several years, our athletic fields have improved with the introduction of new turf fields for football, soccer and lacrosse. However, our baseball fields and softball fields have been ignored. For a city known for baseball, we sure have a long way to go if you look at Westhill High's field. It is almost the end of April and the field is still unplayable, because of a new dugout plan that is crawling along.

The timing of this project and the fact that the baseball season is in full swing is disruptive to all. It affects the three high school teams as well as the American Legion and Babe Ruth programs. Games have to be moved or canceled. Practice times for all teams are a disaster.

We will all appreciate the new dugouts when they are finished, hopefully before the middle to end of May. Everyone understands the economy and that things are tight financially. What we have as of today is unacceptable and totally inexcusable. I would hope that this project is completed quickly before the spring season is behind us.
