STAMFORD, Conn. Baseball broadcaster Ed Randall told Fairfields John Lupton, the executive director of Randalls Fans 4 The Cure Foundation, that he wanted to get support from Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine for a night of fundraising. Randall mentioned New York as a possible site.
I told him it has to be in Stamford, and it has to be at Rippowam, said Lupton, referring to the high school where Valentine was a highly touted football and baseball player. There wasnt any reason to do it any where else.
Valentine, who was named the Red Sox manager in December, will return to Stamford on Sunday, his first local appearance since landing the job. He and Randall will have a two-hour hot stove baseball discussion from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $40 in advance and are available online or at Bobby Vs Sports Gallery in Stamford. Tickets will be $50 at the door, which open at 4:45.
Luptons instincts were right about bringing Valentine home for the event. He said he expects more than 200 people to jam Rippowam in support of the foundation, which increases the awareness of prostate cancer in men and educates them and their families in the most current techniques in treatment.
Ed saw Bobby in the winter meetings, and Bobby said, 'Whatever you need me to do,' Lupton said. The hardest part was working out the logistics. Sunday is Bobbys last free night before he goes about the business of managing the Red Sox. And the best thing is theres no professional football to compete with.
