Tennis Hall of Famer Joins New Stamford Club

STAMFORD, Conn. – Gigi Fermandez, a member of the International Tennis Hall of Fame and formerly ranked No. 1 in the world, has been named the director of tennis at Chelsea Piers Connecticut. The sports facility is scheduled to open in June in Stamford.

During her 14-year career, Fernandez won 17 grand slam doubles crowns, as well as two Olympic gold medals. Fernandez was Puerto Rico’s first professional female athlete and coach of the year in Puerto Rico in 2003. In 2010 Fernandez was named Puerto Rican Athlete of the Century.

Since retirement, Fernandez has coached the Puerto Rican national team, along with serving as head coach at the University of South Florida in Tampa.

In addition to her tennis expertise, Fernandez holds a master's in business administration from Rollins College, and in 2009 she developed and launched Baby Goes Pro, a company that provides young children and their parents with technically correct, fun and instructional products that teach the fundamentals of sports, encourage kids to play and inspire them to move.

As the director of tennis, Fernandez will oversee all day-to-day tennis operations at Chelsea Piers Connecticut,  which includes development and oversight of all adult and junior programming and hiring, training and managing a pro staff. Fernandez will also offer specialty clinics, camps and private lessons for adults and juniors.

Chelsea Piers Connecticut is a 400,000-square-foot sports and recreation facility located just off Exit 9 of Interstate 95. In addition to tennis, the club will include swimming, hockey, squash, gymnastics, baseball, softball and a field house for football, lacrosse and soccer.
