Teenager Troy Wins Stamford Golf

Michael Troy announced himself on the Stamford golf stage Sunday. The St. Luke's senior shot a one-over-par 72 to win the men's flight in the Stamford Amateur Golf Championship by three strokes over Tony Tedesco. Troy finished at nine-over-par 222 for the 54-hole tournament.

"I thought I might have a chance coming into the tournament,'' said Michael, who plays out of Burning Tree Country Club in Greenwich. "I was playing pretty good." The teenager said the victory was the most significant of his blossoming career. "Definitely,'' Michael said. "I've never won a three-day tournament."

Troy began the final round four shots behind Tedesco. He charged up the leaderboard with birdies on the fifth and six holes. Troy's final birdie came on the 16th hole when he drained an 18-foot putt. "I was able to make a couple of putts early to get back into it,'' Troy said.

Tedesco shot 79 in the final to finish second. Jason Jaworoski's closing 73 catapulted him to third, four shots behind Troy, while Chris LaPolice (75) and Bart Weissman (79) finished tied for fourth.

In the men's senior flight, Dr. Lukas Konandreas shot a final-round 74 to win by two shots over Alex Lionetti and George Fjelldal. Konandreas made several clutch putts from about six feet on the final three holes to nail down the victory.

"I was playing really poorly for the last two weeks,'' Konandreas said. "I felt so tired. It all came along today with solid ball striking and good hitting."

Konandreas began the day seven shots behind leader Tom Yates. "I thought I have nothing to lose, so I just stayed relaxed,'' Lukas said. "By the time we were on the 12th hole, I was in the lead. I was able to make some big putts at the end."

Handicap winners included Jamie Russo (A Flight), Sean Sullivan (B Flight), Gion Iannotta (C Flight) and Christopher Domans (D Flight).
