Greeniwch's Nicholas Malchow, Alex Plavoukos and Gavin West joined Fairfield's Tyler Sicignano to set the mark in the boys 9- to 10-year-old 200 freestyle relay. The boys are fifth-grade students, and three of them started swimming with Chelsea Piers Connecticut in 2012. The other member started last spring.
The 30-year old record has been one the hardest to break in the state. Set back in 1985 in Westport, the record was one of the oldest standing swimming records in the state.
"The Chelsea Piers-Athletic Club Swim Team is very proud of these four young men,” said Jamie Barone, head swim coach/director of aquatics at Chelsea Piers Connecticut. "They have all worked hard this year, and we foresee big things from them at state championships in March."
