Stormers Breeze to New England Title

The Shippan Stormers, a 14-and-under tennis team that plays out of the Shippan Racquet Club in Stamford, recently won the New England Sectional Championships to qualify for a berth in the national championships.

Anna Rogers won a girl's singles match and teamed with Brian Niguidula for a victory in mixed doubles to lead Shippan to a 3-2 victory over a team from southern Connecticut in the sectional final. Kateri Martin and Lindsey Evans won their girls' doubles match for the Stormers. The team score was tied at 2-2 when Rogers and Niguidula won their mixed doubles match in two straight sets to clinch the title.

Then, Rogers won in girl's singles, she teamed up with Digby Philpott for a mixed doubles victory, Niguidula won his boy's singles match, the Martin-Evans girls' doubles team was victorious, while George Congdon and Prashant Toteja teamed for a boys' doubles victory as the Stormers swept all five matches in their 5-0 victory over Providence in a qualifying match.

Martin won her girl's singles match, Niguidula won in boy's singles, Evans and Rogers teamed for a win in girls' doubles, and the boys' doubles team of Philpott and Toteja also won during Shippan's opening 4-1 victory over the team from Boston.

The Shippan Stormers will play in the national championships that begin Oct. 22 in Surprise, Ariz.
