Stamford Youth Hockey Team Wins Regional Tournament

STAMFORD, Conn. – The Stamford Sharks Squirt A hockey team won the New England Regional Silver Sticks championship last weekend in Bridgeport. The victory qualifies the team for the Silver Stick championships in Ontario, Canada, later in January.

The Sharks went 5-0 in the tournament and outscored opponents 28-6. Stamford won the championship game over the Western Colonials of Danbury, 5-0.

Stamford opened the tournament with a 6-1 win over the Bridgeport-based Wonderland Wizards, and then beat the Mamaroneck, N.Y. Tigers, 6-1. The Sharks got to the semifinals by beating Brewster, N.Y., 7-2. In the semis, the Sharks out-skated a team from Palisades, N.Y., 5-3.

The tournament victory comes during a banner season for the Squirts (29-6). The team is 14-0 in its division of the Connecticut Hockey Conference, and has outscored league opponents 95-16. Stamford has allowed just three goals in its last five league games.

Stamford leads its division by seven points over Darien. Stamford has handed Darien its only two conference losses this season, 8-2 and 7-0.

Stamford’s team members are Ben Nash, Austin Scheine, Jack Johnson, Cooper Gibson, Tucker Healy, Max Hussar, Leo Johnson, Gary Claps, Tyler Tuccinardi, Jack Kinahan, Gavin Dolan, Hunter Gilchrist, Luke Dube, Myles Bazoia, Bradley Hennessey, Charlie McNeil and Jason Marchese. Rosario Mallozzi coaches the team assisted by Tim Nash and Jake Savona.
