Stamford Rec League Softball Swings Into Action

The bats were pinging and the benches buzzing Monday night as the City of Stamford Softball Leagues got underway at Cummings and the other Stamford parks. Billy Nizolek, coach and owner of Nizolek Landscaping, was happy to be back at the field.

“It feels great,” he said.

Behind a stellar pitching performance from Don Williams, Nizolek Landscaping won its first game of the 2011 regular season, defeating Capomolla Properties, 9-2. The team also got help from first baseman Rick Gronberg, who made several nice plays in the field to thwart any rally attempt by Capomolla.

For Nizolek Landscaping, Monday’s game was a continuation of the preseason, when they won four straight games in the city’s preseason tournament. The team eventually lost back to back games to the Chosen Few in the championship round to finish as runner-up.

While most of the Monday night leagues started without a hitch, not everybody was able to play their opening games. Despite gorgeous weather, Monday games scheduled for Kosciuszko Park and Scalzi 2 were canceled.

Stamford Parks and Recreation softball leagues play Sundays through Fridays. The leagues are scheduled to end after the first week of August, with playoffs to follow.

The games are played on 10 fields at six locations in Stamford.

In addition to 13 men’s divisions there are six co-ed, one women’s and one modified softball division. The city of Stamford also runs adult beach volleyball, adult soccer, and adult basketball leagues throughout the year.
