Stamford Junior Legion Rips Westport

STAMFORD, Conn. – The Stamford American Legion Junior team defeated Westport, 15-2, Wednesday to improve to 16-3 on the season. Stamford leads the Connecticut American Legion Zone 4 standings.

Peter Dawson won his fourth consecutive start, pitching six innings while striking out six. Stamford jumped out to an early lead, taking advantage of some errors by Westport. Stamford took a 5-0 lead into the fifth and broke it open with seven runs.

The offense was led by Nick Della Jacono, who was on base four times and had three hits. Jeff Cortese and Billy Druehl had two hits apiece. Stamford Junior Legion opened up a 3 ½ game lead in the league standings.

Wednesday's win came on the heels a 5-2 win over Greenwich on Tuesday. Logan McCullough earned another the victory, going 5 2/3 innings and fanning nine. Nick Della Jacono finished up for Stamford. Nick Palumbo hit a single, double and triple, scored a run and drove in another. Bryan Pieschel also had a big day with three hits, two runs scored and two RBIs.

Stamford also received contributions from Chris Soule, who had two hits and an RBI, and from Billy Murphy, who was on base three times, with two walks and a double.

Stamford will meet Fairfield at Notre Dame High School on Friday at 5:30 and Darien on Saturday at 12:30 at Cubeta Stadium. Sunday at 10 a.m., Stamford will be on the road again against Trumbull at Trumbull High School.
