Stamford Hockey Star Earns SportsNight Honor

STAMFORD, Conn. – Hockey star Ryan Haggerty will be honored as the Stamford Sports Person of the Year at the seventh annual Fairfield County SportsNight dinner on Oct. 17 at the Hyatt Regency Greenwich.

Haggerty played a vital role in helping Team USA win the gold medal at the 2011 International Ice Hockey Federation World Men’s Under-18 Championship in Germany in late April.

Haggerty scored the first goal of Team USA’s first game en route to a 2-1 victory over Switzerland. Team USA went 6-0 in Pool B and then won the gold medal with a 4-3 overtime victory over Sweden.

Haggerty was one of the best high school hockey players in the state when he was a freshman and sophomore at Trinity Catholic High School from 2007-2009.

He racked up 105 points (51 goals and 54 assists) during his career with the Crusaders. He had 26 goals and 33 assists during his sophomore season while leading his team to a 21-5 record. Haggerty was selected to the All-Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference and Division I All-State first teams during the 2008-09 season.

The USA Hockey coaches and administration targeted Haggerty as a prospect with potential and invited him and many of the best young hockey players in the country to try out for the youth national teams. Haggerty accepted the invitation and was chosen. He attended the last two years of his high school career at Pioneer High School in Ann Arbor, Mich. Westport’s Michael Paliotta was a teammate of Haggerty’s on the USA squad.

This past winter was the second straight year that Haggerty’s national team won a gold medal. He was also on the team that won the World Under-17 Hockey Challenge in Timmins, Ontario, in 2010.

Haggerty is now continuing his hockey career at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.

The newest members of the Fairfield County Sports Hall of Fame and 15 Sports Persons of the Year from county communities will be recognized at the dinner. Sports personalities slated to attend include former Yankees pitcher Tommy John, ex-NY Giants football player Bob Hyland, Lowes Moore, who played with the New Jersey Nets, former world boxing champion Travis Simms and Wes Matthews, a two-time NBA champion with the LA Lakers.

Tickets are $125. For information, call Tom Chiappetta at (203) 984-4806 or email tomchip21@aol.com.
