Stamford Golfer Falls in 1st Round of Senior Am

STAMFORD, Conn. – Stamford golfer Joe Sommers fell in the first round of match play Monday at the U.S. Senior Amateur golf championship in at Kinloch Golf Club in Manakin-Sabot, Va.

Sommers lost to Sam Till Jr., of Fort Wayne, Ind., 4-and-3. After winning the first hole, Sommers lost the 371-yard, par-4 second hole with a bogey. Till won the next three holes, and was 4-up at the turn. The match ended when both players parred the par-4 15th hole.

Sommers advanced to match play by shooting 75-73-148 in qualifying to finish tied for 27th. Till finished with the same total.

Sommers, who plays out of Winged Foot in Mamaroneck, N.Y., punched his ticket to Kinloch earlier this summer by finishing tied for second in a qualifier at Elmwood Country Club in White Plains, N.Y.
