Stamford Golf Community Mourns Death of DeLeo

STAMFORD, Conn. – Jake DeLeo was more than just a golfer at Hubbard Heights in Stamford. DeLeo, who died Sunday at age 97, was Hubbard Heights.

Officially, the name of the golf course on Stillwater Road in Stamford is E. Gaynor Brennan. Everybody who has been in town of some duration still refer to it as “The Heights.” The course opened for play in the 1920s, and became a public facility in 1949. Its name was officially changed in 1978.

DeLeo was the unofficial mayor of the Heights, where he won several club championships.

“He was one of the nicest guys you’ll ever meet,’’ said Vance Levin, the club’s head professional. “He ws always a favorite of the pro shop. Whereas some of our clients seem to get grumpier as they get older, he seemed to get nicer.”

DeLeo played golf frequently, even well into his 80s. He slowed down in recent years, but still loved to visit the course to see friends. “He loved the game of golf and towards the end just wanted to hang out at the golf course with the guys,’’ Levin said.

According to his obituary from Cognetta Funeral Home, DeLeo also won golf championships at the former High Ridge Club in Stamford.

While most people knew DeLeo the golfer, he was just as proud of his history with the Stamford High football team. When I talked to him several years ago after yet another hole-in-one – he had eight in his long golf career – the conversation careened back to the 1930s and 40s, when he talked with amazing recall about playing for the Black Knights. He also played for several other Stamford football teams, including the Stamford Pros and The Golden Bears. He played quarterback and was a kicker, and was one of the town’s top athletes.

DeLeo worked in the construction industry along with his brothers, but golf, and his time at the Heights with his friends, was his passion. “He will be missed by many,’’ Levin said.

Cognetta Funeral Home is handling arrangements. Calling hours are from 4-8 p.m. Friday. The family requests that donations be made to the American Heart Association or the American Cancer Society.
