Stamford Girls Grab First Win

One team was walking out of the Stamford High School gym Wednesday with its first win. Both Stamford and Fairfield Warde were winless in their first two games of the season, and the injury-riddled Black Knights finally put together a solid effort. Led by freshman Kelsey Santagata and 5-foot senior Ebony Razor, Stamford pulled away from the Mustangs to get its first win in its home opener, 45-39.

After coming out cold and trailing by six, Stamford ended the first half on a 10-2 run in the final five minutes. Stamford turned up the physicality in the second half, employing an excellent game plan of speed by guards Razor and Deven Cobbs, and a low-post attack by Santagata. The Black Knights also benefited from Warde getting into foul trouble and executed well at the free-throw line.

"It's about time we got a win. Everybody stepped up tonight, which is what we needed," Santagata said. "We need to continue to step up as a team and get physical."

Santagata had a breakout game, tying with Razor for a team-high 14 points. Santagata was also perfect in free-throws, going four-for-four. Dani Jordine scored five of her seven points in the second half, also helping the Black Knights' late-game explosion.

"I'm excited to be a part of the team and help everybody out there," Santagata said. "We're on the right track now."

Fairfield Warde's Kate Kerrigan had a game-high 16 points, but Stamford was able to silence the rest of her teammates. No other Warde player managed to get into double digits.

Stamford will try to go on its first win streak of the 2010-11 season when it travels to Brien McMahon High School Friday, Dec. 17, for a 5:30 p.m. game.
