STAMFORD, Conn. The Stamford Blue seventh-grade girls basketball team has shown promise in winning three of its four league games in the Fairfield County Basketball League. But when it stepped up a division to face Darien on Saturday, Stamford showed it still has some weaknesses to correct.
Stamford made a second half rally before falling short and dropping a 34-24 non-league contest to Darien at Middlesex Middle School. Turnovers were costly for Stamford, turning the ball over frequently against Dariens trapping defense.
Its tough for us when we go up against pressure defenses, coach Tim Frank said. We tried to dribble through it. Plus Darien is very good. They have some girls weve seen before, and they always play us hard.
Stamford (3-5 overall) got off to a slow start and trailed 8-4 after the first quarter and 16-12 at halftime. It got within 16-14 early in the third quarter, but Darien went on a 6-0 run to go up 22-14 with 4:04 remaining. Stamford was within striking distance at 26-20 with 4:30 remaining, but Dariens Laura Murphy hit two free throws with 4:02 left and hit a clutch shot with 3:35 to play to extend Dariens lead to 10 points.
Lauren ONeill had seven points to lead Stamford, while Gabby Laccona and Olivia Wise had six each.
Stamford plays Friday at AITE in Stamford against Fairfield and meets Ridgefield on Sunday at Westhill High School.
