Sports Group Announces Fairfield County Honorees

The Fairfield County Sports Commission has named its 2011 Sports Persons of the Year in each of the 15 communities it serves. The local sports honorees will be recognized at the annual Sports Night awards dinner to be held at 6 p.m. Monday, Oct. 17, at the Hyatt Regency Greenwich.

In each of the 15 communities, a committee led by a local town representative of the commission selected a Sports Person of the Year. Each winner was deemed to have had the most positive impact in his or her sports community from August 2010 to August 2011.

The Sports Persons of the Year are:

• Bridgeport: University of Bridgeport women's gymnastics team, USAG national champions

• Darien: Mo Minicus, Darien High, national field hockey coach of year

• Easton: Will Boe-Wiegaard, world-ranked professional tennis player

• Fairfield: Connor Rog, Fairfield Prep state champion cross country runner

• Greenwich: L.J. Mazzilli, UConn baseball standout

• Monroe: Dave Strong, Masuk High girls basketball coach

• New Canaan: Christian Higgins, Connecticut state swimmer of the year

• Norwalk: Jim and Joe Parlanti, New England Babe Ruth Baseball Tournament organizers

• Shelton: Shelton High Girls Class LL state championship soccer team

• Stamford: Ryan Haggerty, USA Hockey U18 world champion gold medal winner

• Stratford: Donna and Jeff Babineau, athletic facilities donors

• Trumbull: Brittany Lorenti, world champion archer

• Weston: Jon Pressman, sports community leader, soccer organizer

• Westport: Staples High Boys FCIAC champion soccer team, Class LL state runners-up

• Wilton: Mike Francia, Wilton High lacrosse all-time leading scorer

The Fairfield County Sports Commission is a 501c3 nonprofit organization that is the one-stop resource for the area sports community with a mission of promoting fitness and personal development through sports. The commission, with the exception of the executive director, is an all-volunteer group that gives financial support and its resources back to its communities, primarily focused on the 110,000 school age youngsters it can reach with its fitness awareness education programs.
