Sculti, Hopper Win Diving for Greenwich Team

Two victories by 10-year-old Carolina Sculti got the Marlins Diving Club team off to a strong start Friday at the Whirlwind Winter Weekend Invitational at the New Canaan YMCA.

The pint-sized Sculti won the 11-and-under three-meter and the 12-13-year-old three-meter. James Hopper won the boys 11-and-under one-meter for the Marlins of the Greenwich Family YMCA.

"The whole team did well,'' coach Dylan Korn said. "We went 1-2-3 in the three-meter for the 11-year old girls. This was good meet for us. It's been almost two months since their first meet. It showed how hard they've been working. It was a good start to the weekend."

No one was better than Sculti. She scored 267.1 in the 11-and-under competition, and was followed by teammates Sydney Schrenker and Annabelle Pollack. Her score of 267.1 was nearly 108 points better than Schrenker's total of 159.55.

In the 12-13 three-meter Sculti posted a score of 246.9, followed by Margaret Rogers of the host club with 241.65. Stamford's Rachel Burston took fourth for the Marlins with a score of 225.85. Shannon Daine (seventh), Jennifer Schrenker (eighth), Ashley Parkinson (10th) and Annabelle Pollack (13th) also competed for the Marlins.

"Carolina has been working hard,'' Korn said. "Some of her harder dives she actually did better on than some of her easier dives. She did great for a 10-year-old competing against girls who are 12 and 13."

Hopper scored 225.9 to easily win the boys one-meter. He was the only Marlin in the event.

The meet continues through Sunday. Teams from throughout the region are competing, including divers from Next Generation in Norwalk, Lord of the Boards in New Jersey and the High Dive Champions of Purchase, N.Y.

"It's nice to see them be competitive,'' Korn said. "After tonight's performance, I think they'll all do well at the major competitions down the road."
