Ruth Team Cruises to Regional Title Game

After two straight nail-biting wins in the New England regional tournament, the Stamford 15-year-old Babe Ruth team needed some breathing room. They got it thanks a complete game performance from Steven D'Annolfo en route to an 8-1 win and a date in the New England regional championship game in Quincy, Mass.

D'Annolfo was brilliant in seven innings. He struck out seven and allowed just four hits on the game. Stamford did not wait until its final at-bat of the game to seal a victory against Plymouth, Mass. as it had in their last two games. Stamford jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second on a Kevin Epp RBI double, who was then driven in by Matt Green. Stamford added two more in the fourth on a Jason LoRusso triple and a sac fly by Jeff Cortese. Stamford blew the game open in the fifth putting up five runs on RBI hits from D'Annolfo, LoRusso, James Mattimore and Greg Hajjar.

Stamford has yet to be defeated in the double elimination tournament, so it has two opportunities to take the regional title against the losers' bracket finalist, Leominster, Mass. Stamford takes on Leominster for the championship Monday at 4 p.m.
