Roxbury Dunks Division Rivals

The Fairfield County Swimming League championship will go through Roxbury Swim Club once again. Roxbury won the Division I meet Tuesday at the Long Ridge Club, and will be the favorite in Saturday's county championships. Roxbury has won the meet 16 times since 1991.

"It was a good team event and we tried to get as many swimmers as we could to qualify for Saturday's meet,'' Roxbury coach Rick Lewis said.

Roxbury won the team championship with 1,121 points. Rocky Point of Greenwich finished second with 1,031, and Long Ridge of Stamford took third with 855.5. Roxbury won with balance up and down and its lineup.

Lewis' team went 6-0 during the dual meet season, including a narrow nine-point win over Middlesex of Darien. Lewis figures Rocky Point of Greenwich and Long Ridge of Stamford could challenge his team at Saturday's season-ending meet. Rocky Point won last year's FCSL championship.

Among the top swimmers Tuesday for Roxbury was Corrine Giacone, who won two individual events in the 12-and-under competition (50 meter butterfly, 50 meter breast stroke) and swam on two relays teams. Oscar Ike won two individual events in the 12-and-under competition and Eric Minowitz won two individual races in the 17-and-under events. Both also swam on relay teams. "We've had a great season,'' Lewis said. "We'll just continue to work hard to get ready for Saturday."
