Player Returns As Volleyball Coach

Like a lot of recent college graduates, Mallory Nadro is finding it tough to land a job. Unlike a lot of them, however, Nadro has found a part-time position that she will enjoy for the job's duration.

Nadro, a graduate of Stamford High, will serve as an assistant to Stamford High volleyball coach Mike Smeriglio. A recent graduate of Eastern Connecticut State University, Nadro is hoping to turn her degree in physical education into a full-time teaching position. She starts in a few weeks when the high school volleyball season gets under way. She got a preview of coaching while working at Smeriglio's recent volleyball camp.

"It's hard to go from playing to coaching,'' Mallory says. "I just want to jump out in the court. The camp is a great place to be. The kids seem to love it."

Working under Smeriglio should be a smooth transition for Nadro. As one of his former players, she knows his drills and his motivational techniques. "I think it helps,'' Mallory says. "Still, I want to see what he's going to say."

The camp gave her a taste of what she'll see when she joins Smeriglio on the sidelines. "It's a little frustrating sometimes, but some of [the kids] come out by the end of the camp and they're awesome,'' Mallory says. "Most of them are pretty good. They know what they're doing. They just need to get a little more polished."
