Ornovsky's Bat, Hurd's Glove Lift Trinity to Win

Kellie Hurd was having a rough day. It was senior day and the Trinity Catholic center fielder had misplayed two routine fly balls, costing the Crusaders three runs. Now, with the go-ahead run on second and two outs in the seventh, Wilton's Heather Sabino ripped a high fly ball into center. But the third time was the charm. Hurd made a lunging grab over her right shoulder to end the game, 9-8.

"I was having a heart attack when that ball came at me," Hurd said with a laugh. "It was good for senior day. I'm glad I caught that or else I would have a pretty bad night, I guess."

It was a back and forth slugfest that saw Trinity trying to spoil Wilton's FCIAC playoff hopes. Each time Wilton took the lead in the top of an inning, the Crusaders stormed back.

Caitlin Ornovsky provided the game-tying hit twice with booming triples in the fifth and sixth innings. Katlyn Spielman then drove in Ornovsky as the go-ahead runs in each of those frames.

Krissy Schule shut the door on Wilton in its final at-bat, but just barely. She struck out Darcy Fletcher to start the inning, then walked Amanda Stanzimore. Lizette Roman-Johnson reached on a bunt single and Nicole Roman-Johnson sacrificed her teammates over to second and third. Schule then got Sabino to line out to center. Schule got the win in a rocky outing, allowing five earned runs.

"We just got to the plate thinking base hit and not home run," Ornovsky said. "We wanted to do it for our seniors today and it was a great way to send them out in a tough, long season."

Trinity (4-15) will try to end its season on a high note when it hosts cross-city rival Stamford High Saturday.
