North Stamford's Section 1 championship hopes are dangling by a thread after a 5-1 loss to Fairfield American Sunday.
Peter Horn pitched all five innings for Stamford, giving up seven hits and striking out five.
"Peter Horn gave up five runs, but he pitched well today," North Stamford manager Doug Horn said. "He had maybe one bad pitch."
North Stamford did manage to get on the board first against undefeated Fairfield. Johnny Spoto led off the top of the second inning with a walk, and advanced to third on an errant pickoff attempt. Two batters later, Jeremy Benjamin hit a ground ball that snuck through the infield, and Spoto raced home to give his team a 1-0 lead.
Fairfield scored four runs in the bottom of the third, though, two of them on a two-run home run by pitcher Jack Quinn.
North Stamford had chances to tie the score later in the game, but couldn't find that one clutch hit to swing the momentum back in its'' favor. Jeff Kurzman knocked a two-out double in the top of the fourth, and Horn and Kevin Stone connected on back-to-back singles in the fifth, but none of them came around to score.
"It's just one of those days where we weren't getting good swings on the ball," Doug Horn said.
Horn's squad now needs to win its next game Monday against Farmington, and hope that some other results break their way as well.
"It's one game at a time," Horn said. "You never know what can happen. Hopefully we get a break from the baseball gods and something happens."
