North Stamford All-Stars Fall in Sectional

STAMFORD, Conn. – The North Stamford Little League 10-year-old All-Stars roared through the District 1 tournament undefeated and crushed nearly everybody in their path. The Section 1 tournament, however, proved far more challenging.

North Stamford finished Section 1 play Monday night with a 12-0 loss to District 2 champ Westport. North Stamford finished the tournament 1-3, with its only victory a 7-4 decision over Orange. In Monday's game, North Stamford fell behind 4-0 before it came to bat.

"Westport was hitting the ball and we weren't,'' North Stamford manager Frank Wainwright said. "They came to play and we didn't bring our bats."

North Stamford also committed five errors, including two in an eight-run fourth inning. Westport's big blow was a grand slam in the fourth by Chad Knight, which closed the scoring.

After Westport scored four in the first, North Stamford tried to respond when T.J. Wainwright led off the bottom of the inning with a double and Noah Skaug walked. Skaug got caught stealing, and two strikeouts ended the inning. Bobby Zmarzlek and Chris Della Jacono walked to lead off the second, but that rally fizzled. North Stamford stranded six runners in the game, which was shortened to four innings via the mercy rule. Stamford managed just two hits, a single by Montana Semmel and Wainwright's leadoff double in the first.

North Stamford went 7-0 in the District 1 tournament, winning by an average of 8.28 runs per game. Its only close game was a 4-3 victory over National Lione. It defeated Wilton, 12-5 , to win the District 1 title.

"I'm pleased with all the boys,'' Wainwright said. "Our record's not the best, but we're leaving with our heads held high. It's an accomplishment to get this far. Our boys left it all on the field."
