New Canaan, Staples Play for State Titles Saturday

FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. – New Canaan High School and Staples High School will play in state championship football games Saturday at Rentschler Field in East Hartford. The teams advanced after posting semifinal victories Saturday. The Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference announced the starting times for the championship games Sunday.

New Canaan will meet Daniel Hand High School on Saturday at 2 p.m. at Rentschler Field in the Class L championship football game. Fifth-seeded New Canaan (11-1) advanced with a dramatic 27-24 win over No. 1 Windsor High School in the semifinals Saturday. No. 2 Hand (12-0) defeated Masuk High School on Saturday, 35-14.

The Rams game will be followed at 5:30 by the Class LL championship between No. 2 Staples and No. 1 Xavier High School of Middletown. No. 2 Staples advanced to the final with a 44-20 win Saturday over Newtown High School. No. 1 seed Xavier advanced with a 55-14 win over Norwalk High School.

New Canaan is playing in the state championship game for the sixth straight year. Staples has played in six state title games since 2002. The Wreckers’ last state title came in 2005.
