STAMFORD, Conn. The playoff hopes of the young Trinity Catholic baseball team continued to slip away as the Crusaders came up short against Fairfield Ludlowe on Wednesday. Jeff Cortese came to the plate representing the tying run in the top of the seventh, but grounded out to the pitcher to end it with the score 5-3.
Ludlowe starter Tim Moran stymied Trinity batters for five innings, giving up just two hits. The Crusaders could not take advantage of five walks allowed by Moran, failing to get a runner past first base until the seventh.
Trinitys offense finally came alive with two outs in the seventh. After Jackson Solis drew a walk, three straight hits by Kyle DiVico, Greg Hajjar and Randy Polonia ended the Ludlowe shutout and cut the lead to two. It was too little, too late, however, as Ludlowe closer Vic DAscenzo shut the door.
Polonia was tagged for 10 hits on the mound for Trinity, but the freshman settled down after two rough innings. He wiggled his way out of a bases-loaded jam in the bottom of the third and finished with a complete-game, six-inning effort. He walked two, struck out two and induced a pair of double plays.
It was the sixth loss in seven games for the Crusaders, who fell to 5-9 on the year. Trinity completes a tour of Fairfield when it travels to Warde on Friday for a 3:45 p.m. game.
