STAMFORD, Conn. For the first time this season, everything clicked for the King Low Heywood Thomas boys basketball team. Viking senior captains Drew Sawyer, Matt Reggina and Chris Gaynor led a three-headed assault against St. Lukes on Wednesday for King's first conference win of the season, 75-61.
After struggling from the field in losses to Rye and Brunswick, the King players found their stroke. The Vikings shot for over 50 percent from the field, including a string of four three-pointers in a row by Gaynor and Sawyer.
This is really the first game all season weve come together as a team. Hopefully we can keep this going from now on, Sawyer said. Coach [Greg Dobbs] gave us our shooting percentages yesterday, and they were pretty bad. We knew we had to come out and redeem ourselves and shoot better.
Sawyer led the attack with a huge 24-point effort, including six baskets from the field and 11-for-14 from the free throw line. St. Lukes foul trouble helped King build an insurmountable lead as the Vikings took full advantage of their free throws.
As a team, King was a whopping 26-for-32 from the foul line. Reggina (18 points) and Gaynor (17 points) were both perfect in free-throw attempts on the afternoon.
Kings lead ballooned to as much as 30 points in the second half against a St. Lukes squad that featured two freshmen and an eighth-grader for a majority of the game. St. Lukes finished the game on a 27-11 run in the final six minutes to make the score respectable.
We havent had a game yet until today where we got that kind of contribution out of all three of our captains at the same time, King head coach Greg Dobbs said. I told Drew before the season hes going to drive the bus this season, so to speak. Hes progressing and Id like him to get to a point where he can call all the plays on his own.
King (1-2 conference, 4-5 overall) plays one last non-conference game at the Harvey School in Katonah, N.Y., on Friday at 5:30 p.m. The remainder of the Vikings schedule after that is all Fairchester Athletic Assocation action.
