King's girls basketball team never got warm from the floor during Monday's Fairchester Athletic Association game against Greens Farms Academy. And during one second-half stretch, the Vikings were so cold they seemed to be suffering from frostbite.
GFA escaped with a 32-28 victory, rallying from a 23-14 deficit with 10:15 left in regulation. The Vikings (3-3) went 8:08 without a basket, allowing the Dragons to force a 25-25 tie at the end of regulation. The Vikings, who shot 10 for 59 from the field (17 percent) stayed cold in overtime, shooting just 1 for 7 with three turnovers. King was also 1 for 4 from the foul line in the fourth quarter.
"We had our opportunities,'' coach Jack Kelly said. "We missed a lot of shots, but I have to give credit to GFA's defense."
Sam Karp scored 14 points to lead King, and Tatiana Brown had 10. King led for most of the game, taking a 14-11 halftime lead and expanding it to nine when Greta Savickaite scored on an inside basket with 10:15 remaining. With GFA denying penetration by Brown and Domonique Carter-Stanley, King struggled to hit shots from the perimeter.
GFA took its first lead since 9-8 when Alexa Dudley raced coast-to-coast after a turnover for a 3-point play 43 seconds into overtime. GFA stretched the lead to five, 30-25, on a basket by Alexa Sullivan and held off the Vikings over the final three minutes.
"We got hurt on the boards a little bit,'' Kelly said. "We didn't do a good job of boxing out. Their coach did a good job of mixing up defenses. This is a tough way to start the league season."
