Golfers Swing Away to Help Syha

Parents and friends of players in the Stamford Youth Hockey Association were hitting with a different sort of stick Monday at Silvermine Golf Course in Norwalk. The organization hosted its 20th annual golf tournament to benefit its scholarship program. Over 50 players hit drives, putts and chip shots during the outing.

"When we started the tournament 20 years ago, we wanted to build up the travel program,'' says league president Chris Berlingo. "Now it's more toward the scholarship fund and helping with financial aid packages."

The hockey season is right around the corner for the SYHA. The travel team programs begin practice next week. Families can still register for house league teams, with play scheduled to begin in mid-October. Some teams will be making trips to Lake Placid, N.Y., in December and the bantam team will travel to Sweden in a cultural exchange program.

The league is currently accepting registration for its house league teams. It is also planning its season kickoff and banner raising ceremony for Sept. 18 at Terry Conners Rink. The league will raise banners for five teams, including the Squirt A 2009-2010 team that finished second in the New England sectionals.
