Football Field Named for Stamford Legend

STAMFORD, Conn. — When the Stamford High School football team opens its season this fall, it will be playing on a new field with a new name. The Board of Representatives' Parks and Recreation Committee voted Tuesday to rename it the Andy Robustelli Field at Boyle Stadium.

The Stamford native and Pro Football Hall of Famer died May 31. Ever since, city Rep. Jerry Pia has received many phone calls and emails from residents requesting the name change. After speaking with and receiving the approval of Rick Robustelli — the eldest of the hall of famer's nine children — Pia made the request.

“As famous as he was and as important he was on the football field, he was also an incredible person,” Pia said of Robustelli. In addition to approving the new name for the field, the board also voted to waive the rule saying that a person must have been deceased for six months before having a park or facility named in his or her honor. Both votes were unanimous.

The entire Board of Representatives still has to vote on the issue, which they will do at their Aug. 1 meeting.

Robustelli played in the NFL from 1951 to 1964 for the Los Angeles Rams and New York Giants. The Stamford High School graduate was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1971.

A dedication ceremony is expected to take place before the first game of the year on Sept. 16, when the Black Knights take on Warren Harding High School.
