Date Set for Stamford KIC IT Triathlon

STAMFORD, Conn. — The fifth annual Stamford KIC IT Triathlon will be run on Sunday, July 1. It follows a children's triathlon on Saturday, June 30.

Both events benefit Kids in Crisis, a free emergency shelter and 24-hour crisis counseling center for Fairfield County children and families. Athletes can register online.

The children's triathlon, which debuted last year, will feature events for children ages 7-10 and 11-13. Younger children will swim 50 meters, pedal a 2-mile bike course and run a half-mile. Older children will compete in a 150-meter swim, a 4-mile bike ride and a 1-mile run. The children will compete on courses at Cove Beach.

The Olympic-distance triathlon follows the next morning at 6 a.m. with a .9-mile swim, 24.8-mile bike ride and a 6.2-mile run. Last year’s race had 540 participants. Kids in Crisis expects the race to sell out in record time this year.

The adults start at Cummings Beach. The bike ride rolls through downtown Stamford before veering into North Stamford and other parts of the city. The race concludes at Columbus Park.

The weekend includes a Family Festival. It is a free carnival in Columbus Park open to the public and featuring food, games and activities for all ages, including face-painting, a giant bouncy obstacle course, caricatures and more. The Family Festival  takes place July 1 starting at 9 a.m.

In its brief history, the Stamford KIC IT Triathlon weekend has become a favorite for area triathletes. “We are so excited with how the Stamford KIC IT Triathlon has quickly become a highlight for the city over the last few years,” said Shari Shapiro, executive director of Kids in Crisis and a resident of Stamford. “The triathlon, along with the kids race and Family Festival, truly showcase everything that the City of Stamford has to offer, and provides families with a weekend of enjoyment and togetherness that promotes health and well-being. Through the tremendous support shown by all involved, Kids in Crisis is able to raise critical funds for Fairfield County families and children in need.”

Kids in Crisis is Connecticut’s only free, round-the-clock agency providing emergency shelter, crisis counseling and community educational programs for children of all ages and families dealing with a wide range of crises – domestic violence, mental health and family problems, substance abuse and economic difficulties. Since its founding in 1978, Kids in Crisis has helped more than 107,000 Connecticut children and families. In 2011, some 5,115 children and families received assistance from the organization.
