Clock Strikes Midnight on Stamford Legion's Run

STAMFORD, Conn. -- The carriage Stamford Post 3's Senior Legion team rode to one game away from the state championship has turned back into a pumpkin. Stamford, which stunned team after team as 30th seed in the American Legion Connecticut state tournament, saw its run come to an end Wednesday night in Bristol. No. 8 seed and Zone 3 champion Middletown Post 75 defeated Stamford, 9-1, eliminating Post 3 from the tournament.

Middletown clubbed Stamford's shorthanded pitching for 17 hits. Post 75 starter Tommy Ryan threw a nine-inning complete game, holding Stamford to six hits and striking out 10.

Stamford's only run came on a sacrifice fly by Alex Rough. Stamford had beaten Middletown, 3-2, in the opening game of the double-elimination tournament. Post 3's pitching staff was stretched thin after a stunning loss to Norwalk on Tuesday.

Middletown will take on defending state champion Branford in the losers bracket final on Thursday. Branford defeated Zone 4 champion Greenwich. The winner of Middletown-Branford will play Norwalk for the state championship on Friday.
