Westover 2nd-Graders Open Penguin Exhibit

Second-grade students at Stamford’s Westover Magnet School have been filling their minds with facts about penguins lately. Monday, they revealed what they’ve learned at the official opening of their Penguin Exhibit at the school. It wasn’t a real penguin exhibit, but a PowerPoint presentation that was part of the school’s Virtual Zoo.

The presentation was researched and written by 20 second-grade students in the Library Media Center.

Here are some of the highlights:

? “A penguin’s body temperature is 100 degrees and ours is 98.6,” exclaimed second-grade penguin expert Tarun S.

? “Penguins are birds but they don’t fly, they waddle,” added another presenter, Aaliyah.

? “Penguins have predators like Orca whales and Leopard seals,” classmate Samarth said on his slide in the presentation.

“We used a program called HyperStudio that adds voice and movement to a PowerPoint presentation,” explained Media Center Specialist Carolyn Shea.

Friends and parents in the audience were amazed at the information about penguins and about the very professional presentation.

As a surprise, Mrs. Shea played back the presentation with music and had the students dancing in the aisles.

Just like any big zoo opening.
