Veterans Honored At Stamford Elementary School
STAMFORD, Conn. — The third-grade students at Julia A. Stark Elementary School sang songs, read letters, and gave presentations to honor America's veterans on Monday morning. “Honoring our veterans is something we care deeply about, and Julia Stark School has a long tradition of doing so for Veterans Day in the fall, and Flag Day in the spring. Through their studies in class, and through music, our kids get a perspective on what it means to be away from home and sacrifice for your country,” Principal Mark Bonasera said in a news release. “The veterans we honor [Monday] are true heroes in every sense, and have endured unimaginable sacrifices on behalf of our country. They are truly deserving of our lasting gratitude,” State Sen. Carlo Leone, D-Stamford, Darien, who attended the event, said in the release. In addition to the presentations by the students, the “Take a Veteran to School” event included a presentation of a $2,500 check from Cablevision to the Peter Wojtecki Foundation. The foundation helps veterans in need of financial assistance for medical services, or paying essential bills. Speical guests at the ceremony included Leone, U.S.Sen. Richard Blumenthal, Helen Sienkiewicz of the Peter Wojtecki Foundation, and many local veterans. The event was originally scheduled for Veterans Day, but was postponed to Nov. 19 after Hurricane Sandy caused schools to close for several days. Cablevision sponsored the event.
