Two Schools Win $500 Checks

Two more Stamford elementary schools -- Newfield and Roxbury -- received $500 checks Wednesday as their prize for registering 100 email addresses during Main Street Connect's Better Schools Bonanza promotion. Each will use the money in a different way.

"We plan to donate the check directly to the Food Bank of Lower Fairfield County after we ask other school sponsors and supporters to match the amount," said Newfield PTO co-President Jen Lupinacci.

Roxbury PTO co-president Deb Ehret had a different idea. "We'll put it in our general PTO account and then be able to use it for any number of programs we have for the kids here at Roxbury."

"Our PTO account funds numerous cultural events, field trips and book purchases during the year," she added. "$500 is almost one field trip itself."

Donating to the food bank is an annual event at Newfield and all students participate. "Each year the Student Council puts on a food drive at Thanksgiving which the students do themselves," said Assistant Principal Dr. Connie Stevenson.

Both of the schools' PTOs really got into the BSB promotion, especially when they were closing in on 100 registrations.

Roxbury parent Antonio Romano said, "Once we got close, I really started pushing others to register and watched our number rise until we hit 100."
