Stamford Public Schools went more than a year without a permanent superintendent before the board of education decided to end its search and name Winifred Hamilton to the position June 19.

Hamilton was the assistant superintendent under Joshua Starr, who had the position until April 2011 when he took the superintendent position with Montgomery County Public Schools in Maryland. Before receiving the superintendent position in Stamford, Hamilton served as acting and interim superintendent.

Before her time in the central office, Hamilton spent many years working in Stamford schools as a physical education teacher and then as principal of Dolan Middle School.

Despite the entire board, except for Polly Rauh who abstained, voting in favor of her hiring, several did raise concerns that they did not do a sufficient enough search. However the motion to continue the search was defeated and Hamilton was hired.

The board did hire consultants and search firms to assist in the hiring process and was able to hire Hamilton by its original deadline of July 1.
