Students Swing Hammers to Help Stamford Veteran

STAMFORD, Conn. — A returning veteran from Stamford will be moving into a house built with the assistance of students from King Low Heywood Thomas school through Habitat for Humanity.

The students are going beyond the construction work they did with other Habitat for Humanity volunteers. The kids will be fundraising at a fashion show and a staff/alumni talent show and auction to benefit Habitat for Humanity, a statement said. The students also received $1,000 through Cablevision’s Charity Champions program, which promotes volunteerism.

The school also received $500 through the program to help the students' charitable efforts, the statement said.

A ceremony was held at King on April 13 with representatives from Cablevision and state Sen. Carlo Leone, D-Stamford and Darien, on hand to present the money to students.

“It’s amazing how the students at King Low Heywood Thomas have embraced this cause and are determined to help a returning Stamford veteran,” Leone, who is chairman of the veterans committee for the state Senate, said in the statement.
