Stamford Schools Candidate Pushes Equality

STAMFORD, Conn. – For someone who is not a teacher, Gary Klein has spent a lot of time in the Stamford Public Schools. And the Stamford attorney says it seems to him that certain children have been neglected by the schools, which is why he is a running for the Board of Education.

“It is important to have schools teach all kids,” the former member of the Middle School Advisory Council said.

Klein, a Democrat, has also coached and judged mock trials at Stamford High School. In addition, he has two children and is himself a product of the Stamford Public Schools. His wife teaches at Westover Magnet Elementary School

“I hear people say the schools have changed, but I don’t feel that way,” the Stamford High graduate said, adding that the city is still a diverse and unique place.

Besides trying to ensure an equal education for all students, Klein says one of his top priorities would be hiring a top superintendent. While he has no criteria that would eliminate any candidate, he said he would like a superintendent who either lives in or is willing to move to Stamford.

“The top official should be as invested in the schools as someone who just moved from a foreign country,” he said.

Klein is a partner at the Stamford law firm of Sandak, Hennesy, and Greco and has been listed in New England SuperLawyer and Connecticut SuperLawyer.

Klein will be running with Democratic incumbents Julia Wade and Jackie Heftman against Republican challengers Mike Bayonne Jr. and June Corridor and Independent Karen Murphy. Three seats are being contested.

The Daily Stamford will try to publish profiles of every major Stamford candidate. Election Day is Tuesday, Nov. 8.
