Stamford School Celebrates 9/11's Gift of Unity

STAMFORD, Conn. – With many of us remembering the events of 9/11 this weekend, Villa Maria School decided to focus not on the negatives, but on the positives of that day. So the school’s ceremony celebrated coming together and the patriotism the terror attacks inspired.

“On that day we turned to one another and showed love,” Sister Carol Ann, headmaster of the private school in North Stamford, said.

Participating with the students and staff of Villa Maria were state and municipal politicians, including Mayor Michael Pavia. The mayor chose to recall not just the devastation and hardships, but also how everyone endured the day as well.

“We will always remember and will always commemorate all that is 9/11,” Pavia said after reading his proclamation to the city.

A candle-lighting took place in three-parts. The first, the lighting of two tall candles representing the twin towers, honored fallen first responders. Candles were then lit for the friends and family of victims, and for the friends and family of survivors.

The ceremony included a rededication of the 8-foot Peace Pole, which is inscribed with the word “peace” in many languages; a screening of Michael Jackson’s “Heal the World” music video– during which students handed out flowers to everyone in attendance; and children singing “Children of Tomorrow, Children of Today.”
