Stamford School Board Member Exits in Huff

Jerry Pia walked out of Stamford’s Board of Education meeting not once, but twice, Monday night. Pia, the board’s vice president, said he came to the meeting ready to discuss money transfer policies. None of the other board members were, however, and Pia, chairman of the fiscal committee, announced he was going home and left.

“This is ridiculous,” he said several times.

Pia returned to the meeting about 15 minutes later, calmer but still angry. By way of explanation, he said he had met last week with Hugh Murphy, Stamford Public Schools finance director, to go over policy changes so the board could discuss them Monday night.

After returning, however, Pia refused to join the board and Superintendent Dr. Joshua Starr. He left again once the operations committee portion of the meeting started. The board had taken a recess between the fiscal committee and operations committee part of the meeting to wait for Richard Lyons II, chair of the latter committee, to arrive.

“Look, we’re doing nothing,” Pia said. The transfer policy changes would determine the amount of payments Starr could make on his own without board approval. .

Starr said he would draft the policy changes Murphy and Pia discussed by Friday and the board could discuss them at the next meeting, currently scheduled for May 10.
