Jasmin Palacios and about 20 of her Stamford schoolmates lugged the large bottle full of mini trout to the Rippowam River, waved goodbye, and released them into the water. Jasmin, a sixth-grader at Trailblazers Academy, and her friends had raised the 60 fish from eggs as part of the Trout in the Classroom program. When they were put in the river Wednesday, they were about the size of a finger.
On the trek to the river the students were accompanied by teacher Ryan Carey. At the river they were met by Dick ONeill and Dean Keister of the Mianus River chapter of Trout Unlimited.
Trailblazers Academy is the only school in Stamford with the Trout in the Classroom program, and this was the first year it was offered. Trailblazers is a public school of choice for Stamford middle school students. Most of its 165 students have struggled in elementary school. But with the smaller class sizes and comprehensive human development model at the academy, students are able to gain the skills they need to succeed.
Trout Unlimited works to conserve, protect and restore North American fisheries and their watersheds. Since starting in 1959, Trout Unlimited has protected about 10,000 river miles.
