STAMFORD, Conn., -- Stamford High School music teacher and Westhill High graduate Gloria Sinaguglia has been named as 2016-2017 Stamford Public Schools' 2016-2017 teacher of the year.

The SPS Teacher of the Year and Spotlight on Teachers Award Program committee also named George Beratis, SHS band director as First Finalist, and Chandan Sarkar, Westhill High School math and computer science teacher as Finalist.

Sinaguglia, Beratis, Sarkar, and Teacher of the Year Nominees Jacquelyn Clucus, Cloonan Middle School and Maria Miraballes, Westhill High School, and all 28 Spotlight Award Winners will be honored on Thursday, May 5, at SPS annual Teacher of the Year and Spotlight on Teacher Award Program celebration. The reception and awards celebration, which will be held at UConn, Stamford, from 5-7 p.m., coincides with Teacher Appreciation Week and provides the district with an opportunity to celebrate its outstanding teachers.

“Congratulations to Gloria and to the finalists, who are considered by their peers to be among the best teachers in Stamford,” said Stamford Interim Superintendent James A. Connelly. “Gloria’s talent, enthusiasm, dedication to her students, and commitment to Stamford make her a role model for all in the district.”

Sinaguglia is a product of SPS and has been a music educator in the district for 37 years, 28 of which have been at Stamford High. She is a graduate of Westhill High School and attended both elementary and middle schools in Stamford. Among her many accomplishments, Sinaguglia is the founder of the Madrigal Singers and the SHS Music Honor Society at SHS.

“Gloria is an amazing teacher and a wonderful person. She is kind, gracious, and caring—her students love her,” said SHS Principal Ray Manka. “Gloria has shaped and changed the lives of so many in the Stamford community. We are blessed to have her as a member of our family here at SHS.”

Sinaguglia earned a B.A. in Music Education, from the Hartt College of Music at the University of Hartford; an M.A. in Education, from the University of Bridgeport, and an M.A. in Learning from Sacred Heart University.

Stamford educators were nominated for the Teacher of the Year and Spotlight on Teachers Awards Program by their peers in January. The committee members evaluated all 60 submissions based on the following criteria: Outstanding Teaching, Exceptional Student Support, Exemplary Community Involvement, and Positive Influence on School Culture.

From those nominated, the committee selected 28 educators or teams as Spotlight Award winners and five teachers as Teacher of the Year nominees. Both groups of awardees were announced in early March. The nominees were then required to submit three essays and participate in a committee interview. The committee narrowed the pool of five down to three finalists, who were required to submit a videotaped lesson. The committee reviewed all three videos and made its final decision earlier this week.
