Sacred Heart Academy Grads To Share Decades Of Memories At 70th Reunion

STAMFORD, Conn. — Even though the brick building on Strawberry Hill Avenue in Stamford no longer houses the Sacred Heart Academy, the spirit of the school — and the Class of 1946 — lives on even after seven decades.

On Sept. 10, members of the class will rekindle that spirit at their 70th reunion for their final formal gathering as a class, according to co-chair and Stamford resident Rosemarie Blosio.

“We’re trying to make it extra special [and are] trying to encourage as many classmates as possible to attend,” Blosio said.

The reunion weekend will include a ladies luncheon at the Woodway Country Club in Darien and a Mass at the Trinity Catholic High School chapel to remember classmates and faculty who have passed away.

The weekend will be open to students beyond the Class of 1946, Blosio said. “We’ve gotten people from other classes plus the daughters, sisters or friends of our classmates,” she said.

Blosio expects about 30 to 45 people attend the reunion, with about 20 members of the class.

She’s most looking forward to seeing her classmates. “I made a lot of very close friends [at school], and, of course, we learned a lot about our religion and got a really good education,” Blosio said.

Classmates have come from near and far to reunions in past years. Some have made the journey from Florida and California, while others still live close to the school in Greenwich, Norwalk and upstate Connecticut.

The class has been holding reunions every five years since their 25th reunion, when Blosio began co-chairing the event after she was recruited by her friend and fellow classmate Helenmarie Burns. (Since Burns' passing, Marjorie McGuinness has co-chaired the event.)

Blosio said she hopes that as many classmates attend this reunion as possible. “It wouldn’t be the same without them,” she said.

Sacred Heart Academy, a college preparatory school for girls, opened in 1922 with an inaugural class of 16 students. The school closed in 2006, and Greenwich's Stanwich School rented the building from 2006 to 2014.

The City of Stamford purchased the building in 2014. It will open as The New School in September.
