K.T. Murphy Earns $500 Check

The Better Schools Bonanza pool of winners just got a little bigger. Stamford's K.T. Murphy School PTO has made a splash into the Main Street Connect promotional waters by getting at least 100 people to register on the MSC website. That earned the PTO $500.

"Our goal is to be the neighbor who brings you the news," said MSC President John Falcone, who presented the check during last night's PTO executive board meeting. "You are the heart of the community. Where you go is where our readers go."

Main Street Connect is the umbrella of TheDailyStamford and nine other local news web sites in lower Fairfield County. The target reader is a parent with school-aged children. The sites, all launched this year, deliver local news, neighbor profiles, school news and sports. In addition to Stamford, other MSC cities and towns are Darien, Easton, Fairfield, Greenwich, New Canaan, Norwalk, Weston, Westport and Wilton.

Better Schools Bonanza was launched to help promote the sites and also give PTOs an opportunity to gain funds for programs or projects. After registering, a person may vote for his or her favorite school. The school with the most votes will win $10,000. The second-place winner will receive $5,000. The final day to vote is Nov. 15.

Several Fairfield County schools already have received $500 for registering 100 people. K.T. Murphy is the first school in Stamford to receive its check for doing so.

And how should the school use its windfall?

"Programming for the kids, enrichment that all the kids can benefit from," PTO Co-president Danette Melchionne suggested after pondering a moment.

Perhaps, said Principal Barbara Friedman, "something to do with writing. We really need to build on the students' ability to take a small moment and really build it up."
