Degree Plan Alarms Stamford Parents

The Newfield School Parent Faculty Organization is questioning a proposal to add an International Baccalaureate program at Rippowam Middle School. If it is approved, Newfield and Davenport students would have to enter a lottery with all Stamford students in order to enroll at Rippowam. The board of education is scheduled to discuss the matter Tuesday.

“The Newfield community wants to be involved in the process and have an open dialogue with the board regarding this important issue that affects our children,” said Newfield PFO co-president Michele Somody.

“We feel this change has been sprung on us without the full participation of those families most affected,” she said.  “We heard rumors that this change may happen and decided to ask some questions."

School board President Jackie Heftman commented, “It’s unlikely the board will take a vote at [Tuesday’s] meeting. The board wants to have more discussion on this matter and there is more research needed to be done.”

Superintendent Dr. Joshua Starr’s office did not respond to questions prior to the posting of this article.

The board meets Tuesday at 7 p.m. on the fifth floor of the Government Center.
