Books Are a 'Hoot' for Stamford Kindergartners

STAMFORD, Conn. – Kindergarten students at Stamford’s K.T. Murphy School were hooting and flapping around Tuesday morning as each created an owl.

The owl–“Little Hoot”–is the main character of the book by the same name that each student received as a gift from the Stamford Kiwanis Club. Each class read the book and then made a likeness of the character with paper plates, construction paper, glue, crayons and other art supplies.

“Little Hoot,” by Amy Krouse Rosenthal, is about a young owl who wants to go to bed early like the rest of his friends, but has to stay up late because it is an owl. The Kiwanis Club decided on the book to help kids understand the importance of bed time, although, unlike the title character, the kids were encouraged to go to bed at 8 p.m. – as shown by the clock on their owl’s stomach.

K.T. Murphy was not the only school to receive the book. Kindergarten students and teachers throughout the city got their own copy. Kiwanis Club President Christopher Tasik noted that kids who have books at home learn to read sooner, even if they don’t read at home.

“Just the child having the book makes a big difference,” Tasik said. He added that the club hopes to eliminate illiteracy in the city.

Tasik and other club members were originally going to deliver the books to the schools on Sept. 1, but Hurricane Irene postponed the start of school and the book delivery.

“You kind of feel like Santa Claus,” he said of handing books out to the excited children.
