Back to School: Stamford Kid Glad, Mom Sad

STAMFORD, Conn. – Children all over Stamford woke up Tuesday and for the first time in several months had to grab their books and head off to school. As the kids did so with smiles on their faces, some parents did not.

“I love spending time with my kids. I would not give that up for anything,” Waldellys Ramos said as she brought her son Samuel to his first day of second grade at Springdale Elementary School.

Ramos said she was “heartbroken” that her summer with Samuel and her other children ended Tuesday morning. After dropping off her son she said she was headed home to clean the house, go to the gym and do other things she put off while her kids were home.

Samuel, on the other hand, was looking forward to seeing his best friend, who will also be a classmate this year. “I’m very excited,” he said.

As soon as the crossing guard stopped traffic, Elizabeth Santoro bolted across Hope Street to get to Springdale School, leaving her mother, Ann-Marie, lagging behind. Elizabeth was also looking forward to seeing her friends as she begins her final year at Springdale–the same elementary school her mother graduated from.

Besides seeing his friends, second-grader Christopher Bawden put his likes for the new school year simply: “Recess and gym.”
