STAMFORD, Conn. — An electrical vault caught fire underground late Tuesday on Bedford Street in downtown Stamford, Deputy Chief Eric Lorenz said.

The first call on the blaze came at about 9:15 p.m. with a report of a car fire, Lorenz said. The first unit on the scene determined it was the electrical vault underneath the car, he said. The vehicle was damaged on the driver's side, he said.

The Ferguson Library, Hudson Grille, Butterfield 8 and other buildings on that side of Bedford Street were evacuated because of smoke and potential carbon monoxide in the basements, Lorenz said. The buildings had to be ventilated before people would be allowed to return, he said.

Connecticut Light & Power was on the scene late Tuesday and will shut down power to the transformer, so firefighters can put out the blaze, he said. Officials from CL&P and city’s fire marshals were investigating the cause, he said.

Police had blocked off Bedford Street from Broad Street to Spring Street while firefighters worked late Tuesday.

No injuries had been reported, Lorenz said.
